Canon is going all out with the announcement of its new full-frame EOS RP mirrorless camera.

This camera is a smaller, lighter version of the already available EOS R. Not only is the camera far more compact than the previous, higher-end version, but it's actually a full thousand dollars cheaper for the body, making it a full-frame mirrorless camera that's far more accessible to masses.

The EOS RP Mirrorless Camera

As you might expect, the cheaper camera has received some cuts to reach a lower price. First, there's the sensor. While the EOS R featured a 30.3-megapixel sensor, the newly-announced EOS RP comes with a 26.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor. It's still extremely high resolution, and it should take fantastic photos.

The cameras definitely share some features, too. For example, they both have Canon's accurate Dual Pixel autofocus that features 4,779 manually selectable AF points, a Digic 8 image processor, and a fully articulating 3-inch touchscreen.

Canon's new EOS RP comes with an eye-detecting feature that can automatically detect faces and focus on the eye of the subject, which should make shooting portraits quite a bit easier.

“As Canon continues to evolve its full-frame mirrorless cameras, our goal is that one day the EOS R line becomes as widely popular as our celebrated lineup of EOS DSLR cameras,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc.

The last key thing to note about Canon's upcoming camera is its weight---it only weighs 17.29 ounces. That's staggeringly light for a high-end camera, and according to Canon, it's the "Lightest, Smallest Full-frame EOS Camera" on the market right now, which is no small feat.

Here are some other features of Canon's latest camera:

  • Built-in 0.39 inch, 2.36 million dot Electronic Viewfinder with Touch-and-Drag AF
  • 4K UHD 24P/Full HD 60p video recording
  • ISO range of 100-25,600 that is expandable up to ISO of 102,400
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology
